Since we are in San Francisco this week filming, we will be posting daily updates on all the happenings and shenanigans going down in beautiful sunny Southern California; from the interviews we will be conducting to who got arrested. A Fat Wreck Production Blog #6- Day 1
Let me start off by stating the obvious: it’s been one hell of a long day.
When I travel, I always find myself too excited the night before. I barely sleep, I pack at the last minute, I stress over the smallest details, and I somehow always manage to forget the most basic and crucial items (phone chargers, memory cards, contact case, etc.). And when working with Director of A Fat Wreck Shaun Colon, there isn’t a moment that’s not filled with laughs or the accompanied stress that comes from his disseminate work flow. But there is order in his chaos.
Our trip to San Francisco started at 10am in Dallas, TX. Two visits to two separate banks (one we had to go back to after finding out that Shaun had left his keys there), three different stores, lunch with his ever-charming wife, and a roundabout trip back to downtown Dallas to pick up a team member before heading to DFW airport; it all proved to be very time consuming before catching our 8pm flight. You would think that we would have learned to not wait to the last minute for important things, but a large chunk of the monies still being transferred from indiegogo, a laundry list of equipment that we needed for the trip, and random small details that always arise definitely set the tone for our trip... and we wouldn't have it any other way. This is going to be one whirlwind of an experience.
There’s a calmness to being this busy, though, and it helps you carry your head just a little higher than most days. The feeling of being over-productive is not necessarily a feeling that I carry around most of the time. More often than not, I find myself always pressed for deadlines. I’m sitting on United Airways Flight 1670, leaving from Denver to San Francisco as I write this (our layover to California). But I don’t believe it’s necessarily the work or even sometimes the project that gets me excited. It’s the self-gratifying feeling that you are part of a team, something much larger than the sum of its part, something that you have contributed to, that will hopefully be enjoyed by the masses and maybe even inspire a select few.
The interviews are booked, travel accommodations for our time in Cali are set, and hopefully along the way we can find some place to sleep. But none of that really matters at this point. All that matters is the documentary, our passion for Fat Wreck Chords, and the amazing bands and friendly faces that have agreed to be filmed that will help shape our story into something more than just an anecdote about a record label from San Francisco. Hopefully we’ll capture the spirit of early Fat Wreck Chords, and in turn bring those personal feelings and experiences of the label that helped shape our youth, and possibly yours. It may sound cliche at this point but it doesn’t make it any less true: this film is just as much yours as it is ours.
